Only two days of renovation: Meinloh Elementary School in Ulm significantly reduces heating costs with DEOS TEO
Meinloh Elementary School is centrally located in the Söflingen district of Ulm and, with around 270 students, is one of the largest elementary schools in the city. The school campus consists of a former monastery building that is over 100 years old and a school building that was renovated in 2013. Both buildings were to be optimized in terms of energy efficiency with the aim of significantly reducing heating costs through building automation and achieving a rapid return on investment (ROI). The city of Ulm was looking for a solution that could be quickly implemented during ongoing operations, was future-proof, and expandable. The choice fell on the DEOS TEO wireless thermostat, which impressed with its battery-free operation, reliable LoRaWAN wireless technology, and simple, quick installation.

The city of Ulm launched the project in December 2023 with a pilot project at DEOS. In the newer school building, 44 radiator thermostats were replaced with battery-free TEO wireless thermostats and 22 LoRaWAN wireless sensors were installed. Two gateways were sufficient to reliably cover the entire building. Those involved were particularly impressed by the quick, clean installation and potential savings of up to 30% on heating costs. After just half a day of training, Elektro Trossbach GmbH took over the replacement and commissioning. System configuration, role concept, and dashboards were implemented together with DEOS, so that installation and commissioning were completed within just two days.
LoRaWAN wireless network proved convincing in the second historic part of the building
The first heating period in winter 2023/24 showed significant savings and a noticeable increase in comfort. As a result, the city of Ulm decided to also use DEOS TEO in the historic monastery building. Despite thick walls and ceilings, the planned LoRaWAN gateway positioning proved to be sufficient to reliably cover the building. The Trossbach company implemented the second project in its entirety—from the installation of the thermostats to the system configuration—thus confirming the ease of use and quick implementation of the system.
Smart heating system that thinks for itself!
Room temperatures are controlled centrally and automatically via DEOS TEO, while LoRaWAN wireless wall sensors record the actual temperatures. An integrated time and calendar program automatically lowers temperatures at night, on weekends, and during holidays. If necessary, for example for parent-teacher conferences or conferences, the settings can be temporarily adjusted, while holiday mode also ensures automatic reduction.
Modern operating concept
Different user levels and access rights were defined for the three user groups (caretakers, the city of Ulm, and Trossbach). This means that the level of detail in the user interface and the available functions are tailored to the respective role. Using the DEOS IoT/cloud solution, the target temperatures for each room can be set and the status of the system monitored 24/7 and from any location via cell phone or tablet.
